I am 68, and was young when the first date great, second date U haul joke/ reality phase was happening. So many lesbians who came out and got kicked out of families decided that it may have been safer to be with someone you "kinda knew" than family.

Now it's an old chestnut, then it was surviving

This is amazing. Thank you. I’ve always wondered about the misogyny of this joke — so I’m glad you ended with it. It always seemed just a tad mean-spirited, especially when compared to gay men (ie “what second date?”), who get to be seen, implicitly, as more sexually free and liberated than lesbians. Which is course untrue!
