First things first: I’m out of the ‘office’ this week and potentially next week, so there will be a brief break in our regularly scheduled programming. While I’m away, I thought I’d check in with you all about the state of this newsletter. What would you like to see more of? Are there any topics I haven’t covered that you’d like to see me cover? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Also, this is a reminder that I do accept pitches, though I’m not in a position to pay much because of limited funds. (If you’d like to help with that, you might consider upgrading your subscription…) You can pitch me at kira.deshler@gmail.com or you can DM me here on Substack if that’s your thing.
So you’re not totally without intellectual stimulation this week, here are some reading materials I would recommend, some of which I’ve already shared with paid subscribers.
As Journalists Are Murdered in Gaza Their Counterparts Lose Jobs in America by Steven W. Thrasher
“Between The Hammer and the Anvil”: The Story Behind the New York Times October 7 Exposé by Jeremy Scahill, Ryan Grim, Daniel Boguslaw (a must-read)
The Work of Witness by Sarah Aziza
The legacy of “Fast Car”: How Tracy Chapman gave voice to a generation of Black lesbians (and everyone else) by Hanna Phifer
See you soon!
i pretty much want to read anything about lesbian pop culture/media/news since i get so little of that in general media! also enjoyed the queer theory post a lot, i don't get into academic theory these days but takes me back to my gender studies major days :)
I loved the Queer Theory post and I’d love to have more of this 😊
