Chappell Roan sparking discourse again? Who’da thunk. Roan was on the podcast Call Her Daddy last week and had a great convo with host Alex Cooper. She talked about her girlfriend, her love for dinosaurs, sex, and took Autostraddle’s Am I Gay? quiz. But what really has people in a tizzy are her comments about parenting. Roan noted that many of her friends from back home have young children, and they’re all “in hell.” She went on to say that “I actually don’t know anyone who’s happy and has children at this age.” (Roan is 27.) Parents online – specifically TikTok moms – were pissed at Roan’s comments and wrote thinkpieces and angry comments. On the other hand, studies have shown that motherhood is, you know, pretty hard, and some are actually cheering on Roan’s comments. (Notably, Roan never said moms specifically, but moms tend to be the ones participating in parenting discourse online.) And, as noted in this Daily Dot article, Seth Rogen has made very similar comments and never received the same backlash. Wonder why?
