Welcome to this week’s dispatch from the lesbian internet, a mid-week news roundup from Paging Dr. Lesbian. If you like this type of thing, subscribe, and share it with your friends!
There were several national/international holidays this past week, so let’s get right into it. Friday was International Lesbian Day, which I was not aware existed but am happy to celebrate. If you are a lesbian, congratulations! If you’re not a lesbian but are blessed to have lesbians in your life – also congratulations! Monday was National Coming Out Day. Lynda Carter said fruity kids who used to do the Wonder Woman spin are valid. Big bird says hello. And, as Muna Mire said on Twitter “coming out is never a necessary condition of queerness.”
Monday was also Indigenous People’s Day. If you want to celebrate, why not read a book by an indigenous writer, or donate to the indigenous water and land protectors who are fighting to Stop The Line 3 Pipeline.
On Thursday, sapphic pop star Fletcher released a song and video called “girls girls girls.” The chorus of the song is a riff on Katy Perry’s (in)famous anthem “I Kissed a Girl,” with a notably queerer spin.
[If you don’t want spoilers for The Morning Show, don’t read this paragraph]. It has come to my attention that Reese Witherspoon and Julianna Margulies’ characters are now an item on the Apple+ series The Morning Show. (Sorry, I could only find a fan edit of the kiss in question). I stopped watching this show because I thought the plot was silly and Reese’s acting was bad, but obviously I am intrigued by this. Perhaps more importantly, these events have led us to yet another hilarious Julianna Margulies headline. (Remember when she, unprompted, talked about how David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson slept together in the ‘90s? Or lied about her fight with Archie Panjabi on The Good Wife?) “Who’s to say I haven’t had my own gay experiences” really is an incredible quote.
In sports news, an incredibly powerful moment occurred at an NWSL game last week. Several NWSL players accused a former coach of sexual harassment and abuse earlier in the month, and it was also alleged that league management knew about the allegations and did not respond appropriately. (NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird resigned last week). Last week, two teams staged a mid-game protest, stopping game play and linking arms with one another in center field at the 6th minute, which marks “the 6 years it took for the players to be heard.” Watch below.
At long last, Season 2 of The L Word: Generation Q has finally ended. I’ll say it: Gen Q is not very good and I was waiting for it to be over. Frankly, it feels like a lot of us were watching it out of some sort of cultural obligation, but it really did not live up to the hype. If you haven’t been keeping up with recaps, I will once again recommend Maddy Court’s excellent recaps on her Xena Worrier Princess newsletter. I would also recommend this article in the LA Times about the show’s many failings, including its disheartening treatment of Rosie O’Donnel’s character, the first-ever fat, butch character in the series’ history. (Someone quoted in the article said watching it was like “trauma bonding” – a term which was misused by the character in the show who is supposed to be a literal conseulour!)
For all my horror fans out there, the first trailer for Scream 5, the first Scream film without Wes Craven at the helm, premiered on Monday. This is relevant to us because apparently, there is a lesbian couple in the main cast, and one-half of the couple is reportedly played by Jenna Ortega, a former Disney star (Ortega’s character is featured at the beginning of the trailer). Jury’s still out on if either sapphic will survive (or if we will get a lesbian Ghostface this time around).
That’s all for this week, folks! Stay tuned for more. In honor of National Coming Out Day (inspired by everylesbianandtheirfashion), here is the always-relevant Edith Massey in Female Trouble.
