Welcome to this week’s dispatch from the lesbian internet, a mid-week news roundup from Paging Dr. Lesbian. If you like this type of thing, subscribe.
This week was New York Fashion Week, which means we got many looks from many different celebs. I don’t care about most of them, so I will stick to what’s important. Kehlani has been sporting a new two-toned Cruella de Vil hairstyle that she paired with an incredible outfit last week. Megan Fox has given us so many incredible looks this week I don’t even know where to start. Below is (I think) what she wore during fashion week.
The VMAs, which frankly become less relevant every year, took place on Sunday. Megan Fox was also there, wearing a sheer dress that I frankly can’t put into words (pictured below). Normani performed, and, in what was ostensibly a Janet Jackson reference, ended the performance giving Teyana Taylor a very acrobatic lap dance while Taylor was tied up to a giant silver contraption. I’m not quite sure why Taylor was there and not performing herself, but go off I guess?
On Monday evening the Met Gala took place, and it was a bit of a dumpster fire. This year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which seemed to be interpreted very differently by each guest, including many who wore European designers. Here are the sapphic highlights (?). Cara Delevigne wore a vest of some sort that said “peg the patriarchy.” Megan Rapinoe wore a red-white-and-blue suit with a clutch that said “IN GAY WE TRUST.” Megan Fox wore something stunning (left, below) after a week of incredible looks. Notoriously Converse-clad Kristen Stewart was serving high femme. Tessa Thompson and Zoe Kravitz were judging everyone (as they should). Kehlani was riding around in a limo with SZA. (Are they, you know? Maybe!) Hunter Schafer put a spider on her face and wore one of the only cool and actually avant-garde looks of the night. Everything else was a mess.
Speaking of Kehlani (as I always am), she released a new music video today for her song Altar, which is apparently about her experience with grief. Watch below.
In Instagram goss, JoJo Siwa celebrated her 8 month anniversary with her girlfriend Kylie, and she predictably posted about it on Instagram. (I can’t wait for their one-year anniversary). British singer Romy of the band The xx got married recently, and their wedding looked very fun. As Jessie Ware wrote in the comments section of Romy’s Instagram post, Mazel tov! Selena Gomez posted a photo on Instagram with the caption “girls want girls.” Ostensibly this is a reference to the aforementioned Drake lyric, but as someone put it in the comments section: “this feels fruity girl.”
Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones is playing another lesbian character, this time in a new BBCI drama called Vigil, which is apparently a detective show. The series also stars Game of Thrones alum Rose Leslie as Jones’ lesbian lover, which also happens to be the second time Leslie has played a lesbian cop. (The first was in Luthor). If I keep seeing clips of them on my timeline I might have to start watching.
My colleague here on Substack, Becca from Read Something Queer, has just announced a lesbian pulp fiction zine that you can read about and order here. (Becca and I swapped columns several months ago). I love lesbian pulp fiction and I love zines, so I’m sure it will be great.
Lastly, I wanted to update you all about the Judith Butler censorship situation that had me incensed last week. The author of the aforementioned Guardian article, Jules Joanne Gleeson, has since published the entirety of her question and Butler’s answer on her Patreon page in order to preserve it in its entirety. According to the Guardian, they removed the question (and answer) because the initial question contained a reference to an ongoing legal case that brought up a lot of transphobic ideas. However, Gleeson maintains that she submitted a different version of the question once this issue was brought up, and Butler’s answer never addressed the legal case anyways so this excuse seems very flimsy indeed. It also put Gleeson at risk of a lot of pushback from the public, which freelancers are rarely equipped to deal with. Protect freelancers, and protect Butler’s intellect!
That’s all for this week, folks! Stay tuned for next time. I will leave you with this image (from Twitter) of a sapphic Coachella lineup. If you understand all of the references in this, I will give you an award, or something.
