Welcome to this week’s dispatch from the lesbian internet, a mid-week news roundup from Paging Dr. Lesbian. If you like this type of thing, subscribe.
In case you missed it, last Thursday the trailer for Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana biopic Spencer dropped. This is exciting for multiple reasons, such as: people love Princess Diana, and people have lots of opinions about Kristen Stewart. The film is directed by Pablo Larraín who also directed the excellent Jackie, for which Natalie Portman should have won best actress. The director of photography on the film is Claire Mathon, who, as you might know if you are a gay nerd like me, also did the cinematography for Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Somewhat hilariously, much of the discussion surrounding the trailer focused on Kristen Stewart’s British accent. This is funny because she speaks precisely two words in the trailer: “They don’t.” (Pictured above). As some people noted, she also does whatever that thing Keira Knightley does with her mouth and teeth when she speaks these two words. I will obviously be watching this movie.
In other news, Netflix will be making a sequel to The Old Gaurd, the Charlize Theron film where she plays an ancient, immortal lesbian. It will be directed by Victoria Mahoney. Also, JoJo Siwa (I know you’ve missed her!) will make history by becoming the first competitor on Dancing With The Stars to compete with a same-sex partner. JoJo stays winning.
If you didn’t know, the sapphics have been out and about this week. Thirst traps, anyone? Chef Melissa King posted this photo of herself lying in a field looking dapper, and bicon Megan Fox went out wearing one of the most incredible tops I’ve ever seen.
Also, Beanie Feldstein and her British girlfriend Bonnie (say that three times fast) went vacationing in Big Sur. Sarah Paulson was spotted in front of the Levi’s ad she did with gf Holland Taylor, which was iconic.
In casting news, hot redhead Bridget Regan – whom sapphics have been fancasting as Poison Ivy for literal years – has actually been cast as Poison Ivy in the CW’s Batwoman series. (Personally, I am aware of Bridget Regan because she was evil and kissed Hayley Atwell in Agent Carter, but I do know that she also played an evil sapphic in Jane the Virgin). The power that this has!
Lastly, I read something this week that I wanted to share with you: this article in The New Yorker about Simone De Beauvoir, written by Merve Emre. This month, a previously unpublished De Beauvoir novel, titled Inseparable in the U.S., will finally be available to the public. The novel is primarily inspired by De Beauvoir’s best friend and first love, a young woman named Zaza who died at the age of 21, and whose death De Beauvoir never really seemed to recover from. Emre weaves the story of De Beauvoir and Zaza’s lives remarkably, noting that De Beauvoir consistently distanced herself from the label “lesbian” throughout her life, despite Zaza’s presence seeming to haunt her every word. This book will be on my bookshelf imminently, right next to my copy of The Second Sex. Read one of my favorite paragraphs below.
That’s all for this week, folks! Don’t forget to tune in next week. I will leave you with this meme, for your edification.
