Welcome to this week’s dispatch from the lesbian internet, a mid-week news roundup from Paging Dr. Lesbian. If you like this type of thing, subscribe, and share it with your friends.
In case you missed this news lately, Amy Schneider, a trans woman from Berkely, California, is one of the biggest Jeopardy! champions in the show’s history, having won over a million dollars on the show over the course of more than 30 consecutive games. Schneider holds the record for the highest-winning woman in the show’s history and currently holds the fourth-most consecutive game streak record. Despite some transphobic and misogynist pushback she has received, Schneider has remained positive about her experience, especially when she receives messages about the positive effect she’s had on people. Schneider also frequently talks about her girlfriend on the show – during the segments when host Ken Jennings asks the contestants about their lives – sharing sweet anecdotes about how the pearls she wears are in honor of her or how they want to buy a house with two baths so they can take baths at the same time. It’s truly a very joyful and exciting thing to watch. If you haven’t gotten into Jeopardy! before – now’s the time.
I continue to be enamored with Yellowjackets, which included a very sweet gay moment in the last episode (amidst a drug-induced ritual that will surely lead to cannibalism very shortly). Emo indie bisexual Lucy Dacus is also a fan of the show, she has said on Twitter. In response, Yellowjackets star Liv Hewson, who plays Van, told Lucy: “the amount of season one group hangs that included all of us singing night shift in unison... queen...you're IN the show.” For more on Yellowjackets, here’s Doreen St. Felix in the New Yorker.
You may recall several months ago when I discussed the gossip news about Toni Morrison and Fran Lebowitz potentially having been a couple, news that was broken (to me) by betteportergallery on Instagram. After playwright Jeremy O. Harris tweeted “When are we allowed to talk about THAT couple?”, noted elder queer Holland Taylor for some reason knew exactly what he was talking about and people thought she confirmed the tweet was about Morrison and Lebowitz by posting a quote from Morrison the next day. One Twitter user decided the time was right and tweeted “ “circling back on this” is it them,” along with a photo of Lebowitz and Morrison. In response, Harris posted a bunch of side-eye emojis, and Taylor (who is apparently always on Twitter) responded “Mmmmm-hmmmm.” This seems like a pretty solid confirmation to me! They may be one of the most iconic – if newly unearthed – lesbian couples in recent memory.
The Golden Globes “happened” – meaning the awards were announced without an actual ceremony – on Sunday, and Pose star MJ Rodriguez won for best actress in a television drama series, making her the first trans actress to win a golden globe. Though there were no formal acceptance speeches this year, Rodriguez took to Instagram live to celebrate the win, telling viewers: “This not just for me, this is for y'all.” Rodriguez was nominated for an Emmy last summer – another history-making moment – which she did not end up winning, so it’s great she finally won.
In response to her coming-out announcement, Cassandra Peterson, AKA Elvira, said in a podcast: “I knew that there was going to be some horny old men out there who were just not going to like the fact that they didn’t have a chance with me anymore.” Continuing on, she said: “And I hate to tell them they already didn’t have a chance with me anyway.” So true, queen! She said she was more worried about LGBTQ fans feeling upset that she had waited so long, but that was certainly not the case.
Other things:
The Season 2 premiere of Euphoria came out on Sunday night. From what I’ve heard, it was gay and someone who deserved to be punched got punched.
Kehlani and 070 Shake are Instagram official.
Jenny Shimizu’s wife, Michelle Harper, posted this sweet photo of them.
Read this piece, from Sasha Geffen in Them, about the radical trans narrative of Titane.
Jennifer Garner was thirsting after Julianne Moore, for some reason.
I’ve been informed that Rosamund Pike is gay in the new series The Wheel of Time. Do with this information what you will.
Today would have been Naya Rivera’s 35th birthday. Celebrate by watching her performance of Rumour Has It/Someone Like You.
That’s all for this week, folks! Stay tuned for more. I will leave you with this incredible June 25, 1991 issue of Weekly World News, posted by wussymag.
