as a young lesbian in the 80's, discovered a zine called "On Our Backs". it was the first time I could recall seeing any open references to the fact women were actually having sex with each other. it was one of my favorite finds.
I grew up in France in the 90’s and I used to buy Têtu once in a while. Unfortunately, it’s a French gay magazine (it started in 1999) that mostly centers men. Nothing much about lesbians.
I learned recently that there was a lesbian magazine called “Lesbia Magazine” (from 1982-2012) but I never saw it anywhere while I was living in Paris.
Then I left France in 2006 and it wasn’t until 2014 that a new lesbian magazine emerged “Well Well Well”. I only learned about it a year ago. I bought the old issues (only 4 printed so far).
Thank goodness for the website “AfterEllen” and “The L Word”. I would have been really miserable without those media.
I was a regular reader of Curve (and Deneuve!) ... it was so exciting to see a glossy magazine that was aimed at lesbian/queer women like me! I remember being so thrilled that someone was producing a national magazine that I could find (especially once I left NYC and moved to Wisconsin!)
Loved the magazine and loved the documentary!!
Thanks for this small and important piece of history. And yes, our work is not done.
